The Dark Tower Movie News

dt_2_finch

For those of you who don’t know, Lost Executive Producer J.J. Abrams bought the rights to The Dark Tower Series for a incredible 19 dollars (presumably in keeping with the recurring number in the books). Abrams is quoted as saying this in regard to the upcoming project’s status:

“Damon Lindelof and I talked to Mr. King. We got the rights for ‘ The Dark Tower’ as a film. Damon is obviously still on ‘Lost’, and we’ve been working on ‘Star Trek’ together. As soon as ‘Lost’ is done, hopefully we’ll begin tackling that.”

The plan is to make seven films out of the seven books in the series, a la Harry Potter.

Lindelof had this to say about the series’ potential:

“The Dark Tower is to me every bit as daunting an adaptation as the Lord of the Rings trilogy must have been for Peter Jackson, except we’ve got seven books we’re looking at. And the idea of doing that at the same time Carlton and I are bringing Lost to a close is simply not viable. There are always Dark Tower conversations, but the figuring out of what this will look like as a movie has not begun. If The Dark Tower were in the right hands, I would love to see seven movies executed just right. But you have to get people to see the first one to get them to come and see the second one.”

I think that with J.J. Abrams, The Dark Tower is in pretty good hands. Even if your not a fan of everything he has done, you cannot deny that he takes  pride in all his projects and strives to make the best possible movie or TV show that he can.

UPDATE: SORRY TO SAY, BUT THE PROJECT IS APPARENTLY OFF. I SUPPOSE THERE’S NO TELLING WHEN OR IF WE WILL SEE ROLAND AND HIS KA-TET ON THE BIG (OR LITTLE) SCREEN…

  3. I have heard that Christian Bale is the 1st choice as Roland. I’m looking forward to this series being filmed – it will be an incredible task to capture the spirit of this series.

  4. Christian Bale would be a good choice. I could also see Johnny Depp in that role. As for the movies, an effort so gargantuan in scale would be like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies combined. But I think Abrams is up to the task.

  5. i have been long waiting for a Dark Tower film adaptaion… but in my mind Viggo Mortensen was the perfect Roland! Christian Bale, upon hearing the news, doesn’t seem like a bad second choice.

    • Yeah, I could definitely see Viggo in that role. Choosing the actor who will portray Roland will probably be the most difficult part. -Ed.

    • Hugh Laurie could be pretty good… It never would have occurred to me before, but now that I think about it, he could do a pretty good job with it… I have to admit that I really like Mortenson as Roland, though… The more I think about it, the more I like it…

  7. ok this is for JJ Abrams, realizing it’s going to take a while to make this movie, even if he starts work on the scrip in 2010, the casting might be tricky, here is a list of up and coming actors who I BELIEVE can be these parts, now or in a couple years, the first name for each character is my first choice, the other names are extra thoughts 🙂 most of these guys are picked for acting chops, not too many big names

Roland Deschain: Jon Hamm-i know i know, thats crazzzyyyy! and all that, but I see something in what he is, I think he can do it with distinction.

    Stephen Deschain: CLINT

Randall Flagg: Christian Bale, because he can be downright EVIL

    Martin: Mike Patton, seriously.

Susannah: Naomie Harris, then next pick, Sanaa Lathan, then kerry washington..close to the right age group, odetta had class, detta had kickass 🙂

Eddie: Joseph Gordon Levitt, yeah he’s scrawny, but he’s a smart ass who could do it, if he just COULD NOT do it, i guess i’d try cillian murphy?

Jake? depends on when the movie is being cast, can’t say right now, dont know when it’s going to happen, hope they get a kid who can act

Alain: lee pace, has the right spirit, or charlie hunam
Cuthbert: Ben Foster i guess, haven’t been able to find the right one
    Jamie:Emile Hirsch,,,,maybe?

Cort: Ray Winstone, the voice of beowulf c’mon 🙂

Vanney the Wise: Guy Pearce, total educational counterpart to Cort

    Tick Tock: Alexander Skarsgaard

Jack Andolini: James Gandolfini, (and it rythmes)

Balthazar: Jon Stewart, I think of The Faculty Death scene 🙂

Jack Mort (the Pusher): maybe Tim Roth

    Father Callahan: Owen Best

    Sheemie: Adrien Brody

Dandelo: Javier Bardem or if it cant happen then Gerard Butler

The Crimson King: dang, this is almost as hard as choosing Roland, he’s got to be completely off his rocker and imposing maybe Clancy Brown? off the top of my head, watch the Carnivale show he did for hbo 🙂

    • And not to mention the Kurgan from Highlander, one of the best bad guy roles ever put on film…
Thanks for all your suggestions, cstarrrr. Some good ones. Christian bale especially… and Clint as Stephen would be a cool cameo for him as an old gunslinger (which is essentially what he is) ….except that we don’t meet Stephen until Wizard and Glass – the fourth book (fourth film?) and who knows how old Clint will be when that happens…. Thanks again and keep the comments coming, everybody…
